An honest response

Tonight I was asked by a charismatic christian, “Does god exist?” The most honest answer I could give is “I don’t know.” It occurred to me that since I simply don’t know it follows that belief in god for me is impossible. For to believe I would need to employ faith and frankly I’m unable to do that because I’m not an idiot. Imagine if I asked you, “is there an oily midget in your bathtub?” Without looking in your bathtub you would be compelled to respond with “I don’t know.”Do you believe there might be an oily midget in your bathtub? Do you have faith that there might be? By now you certainly have grasped the ridiculousness of this scenario. It offends the intellect. That is exactly how I feel about believers in the almighty.

And as for god…there is no fucking god.

Is Atheism an Ism? Atheism is No Religion, Philosophy, Ideology, Belief System.

Atheism is not an “Ism”:

When people talk about “isms,” they are referring to some “distinctive doctrine, theory, system, or practice” like liberalism, communism, conservatism, or pacifism. Atheism has the suffix “ism,” so it belongs in this group, right? Wrong: the suffix “ism” also means a “state, condition, attribute, or quality” like pauperism, astigmatism, heroism, anachronism, or metabolism. Is astigmatism a theory? Is metabolism a doctrine? Is anachronism a practice? Not every word that ends in “ism” is a system of beliefs or an “ism” in the way people usually mean it. Failure to realize this can be behind other errors here.

The Atheist Experience™: Unequally yoked: Advice for atheists in a relationship with a theist.

Having recently parted ways with a woman who is Christian, I found this an interesting read. Personally, I think it is extremely difficult to sustain a relationship when one partner is a Christian and the other atheist. I never say never, but that has been my experience to this point. This is not a rant on my ex either, as I respect her, like her, and would be the first to defend her right to believe whatever she chooses; even if I completely disagree with that belief. I believe that there is evidence to support the notion of belief, I see it all around me everyday, I just don’t believe that there is evidence to support the existence of god. Given this blog, I am stating the obvious.
